The 7th annual Rio Grande Half Marathon and 5K Run/Walk offers runners and walkers a chance to participate in a fun and scenic course that runs through the streets of “the Duke City” & along the river that flows right through the heart of Albuquerque. A great community event that brings together athletes of all ages and abilities to celebrate fitness, health, and camaraderie. It is also a benefit that raises money for Special Olympics New Mexico and many of the Special Olympic athletes participate in the event as well.
Runners will start and finish the out-and-back course at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, which seeks to preserve and promote Hispanic contributions to the arts and humanities through programs and performing arts series staged throughout the year. Located on 4th Street overlooking the Rio Grande, the center serves as both the starting and finish lines as well as the race awards ceremony, which starts at 9:30 AM after the race.
The starting time for the half marathon is scheduled for 6:30 AM to give runners enough time to complete their 13.1 miles before the heat of the day sets in, as runners will spend much of the race out in the open sun, away from shade and tree cover. All runners who cross the finish line in the half marathon will receive a finisher’s medal.
